2016 FALL ENGLISH CLASS

Sometimes it is difficult to know how we should practice the Buddha's teachings in daily life, so this year we will  focus on understanding what to practice, and how practicing the dharma brings happiness and benefit to ourselves and others.   Classes  consist of meditation, teachings and discussion, as well as  video talks by monastics in the Theravadan, Chinese and Tibetan traditions.   All teachings are in English and the classes are free, casual,  and open to anyone who is interested in the Buddha's teachings.  Please join us.

What is Buddhism  - We will explore the unique insights of the Buddha, as well as examining the path of practice.  Bring your questions, as we will  discuss this topic in detail.

This Precious Human Life - We are in this world for a short time, so it is important to use our life well by learning and practicing the teachings.

The Poisons - A look at the three poisons that cause suffering  and how we can overcome them.

Aspects of Freedom - Video teaching by Ajahn Nyanadhammo about the path of practice, as well as the happiness and freedom that come from practicing the teachings.

Sigalovada Sutta and Parabhava Sutta - The Buddha's teachings specifically directed at lay people on  how to live a good life.

Perception -  Video teaching by Ajahn Bramali on how the way we see things affects our life and the karma we create.

Who Am I? - Video teaching by Ven. Guan Cheng that explores the illusory sense of self.

Rebirth  - An exploration of rebirth based on evidence discovered by researchers.

The Panca Niyama - Video  teaching by Bhante Olande Ananda Thera on the five laws of cause and effect which determine our life.

An In - Depth Exploration of Karma - There are many misunderstandings about karma, so we will look at what the Buddha actually taught about karma by looking at several suttas  from the Pali Canon.

Living Fully In the Present Moment - A discussion of the Bhaddekaratta Sutta.

Change Your Mind, Change Your Brain: The Inner Conditions - Video teaching by Ven. Matthieu Ricard showing  scientific evidence that meditations on loving- kindness ( metta) and compassion can change the brain and one's life.

Dec. 11

The Buddha's Past Lives - A look at the Buddha's lives as a bodhisattva in many different life forms, as told in the inspirational Jataka stories. In each life, the bodhisattva showed great loving-kindness and compassion, qualities we also must develop.  

Dec. 18

The Pureland - Video teaching by Ajahn Brahm in which he gives a very different, but insightful understanding of the Pureland and the importance of learning and practice right now.
